Prosecutors are seeking a 25-year prison sentence for Michael John C, who denies murder and says Vanessa Elizabeth’s death was a tragic accident. She was found dead outside the couple’s property after the defendant was arrested on 4 December 2022.
The prosecution alleges that the couple had been drinking before an argument at home and that the defendant repeatedly assaulted Vanessa, causing fatal injuries. The defence gives a different account, saying he may have struck her accidentally while reversing the vehicle after she got out to stop the dogs escaping.
His lawyer is asking for a full acquittal, arguing there was no intention to kill. As an alternative, the defence says any conviction should be for manslaughter, with alcohol consumption considered as a mitigating factor. The case remains before the court and the allegations have not been proven.
