Anti-Corruption prosecutors are seeking three years in prison for González over alleged official-document falsification, together with disqualification from public office for alleged abuse of office. The former municipal secretary and the representative of the developer, Acuario Properties, are also on trial.
The case concerns an urban development programme covering about 20,000 square metres. González’s family owned around 4,000 square metres within the area, and prosecutors say the agreement awarding the development was signed on 23 December 2004, five days before the municipal plenary meeting formally approved it.
The proceedings began after judicial investigations launched in 2006. The prosecution argues that the defendants knew about the mayor’s private interests and that the operation could have benefited the developer and the mayor’s family. The allegations will be examined during the trial.
