Spain’s Constitutional Court has partly upheld the central government’s challenge to Valencia’s Coastal Law. The ruling, announced on Thursday 22 October, says the regional government cannot restrict the State’s powers over the maritime-terrestrial public domain through its heritage-protection measures.

The Babilonia homes are a traditional group linked to Guardamar’s history since 1934. They remain subject to final demolition orders that have not yet been carried out. The decision does not set a new demolition date and does not cancel the whole regional law.

The Generalitat regional government says it will study other legal options for protecting coastal settlements with special heritage value, while the affected residents have criticised the ruling and called for greater responsibility from the authorities over beach management.
